Union Bank President and CEO Masaaki Tanaka Appointed to Kyoto Symposium Organization's Board of Directors

SAN DIEGO - February 9, 2009 - San Diego's non-profit Kyoto Symposium Organization today announced the appointment of Masaaki Tanaka to its board of directors. Tanaka is the president and chief executive officer of UnionBanCal Corporation and its primary subsidiary, Union Bank, N.A. He is also managing executive officer of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd. (BTMU).

"Masa brings a wealth of experience to the board," said Robert Horsman, chairman of the Kyoto Symposium Organization (KSO). "We believe he will be a strong voice in advising KSO as we help build the prominence of the Kyoto Prize in North America. This is especially important as the Inamori Foundation celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Kyoto Prize in 2009."

Tanaka's numerous professional and community activities include membership on the board of directors of the Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley; The Clearing House, the nation's oldest bank association and forum; The Financial Services Roundtable; the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco; and the Japan Society of Northern California. He is on the board of governors of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles and is first vice-president of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern California. Additionally, Tanaka is serving as a co-chair for the Kyoto Prize Gala in San Diego on March 18, 2009.

Tanaka joins a select group of board members that include Chairman Robert B. Horsman, president and CEO of San Diego National Bank; Malin Burnham, vice chairman of Cushman-Wakefield of San Diego and the organization's founding chairman; Rodney Lanthorne, president of Kyocera International, Inc., of San Diego; and Toyomi Inamori, senior managing director of the Inamori Foundation, Kyoto, Japan.

"Each year, the Kyoto Prize Symposium introduces Californians to some of the world's great visionaries - the Kyoto Prize laureates - and provides college funding for high school seniors who hope to follow in their footsteps," Tanaka stated. "It is a privilege to serve on the board of an organization committed to honoring those who better the human condition while inspiring our youth to do the same."

About the Kyoto Symposium Organization

About the Kyoto Prize

Presented to individuals and groups worldwide each year by the non-profit Inamori Foundation, the Kyoto Prize represents Japan's highest private award for human achievement. It recognizes outstanding global contributions to the betterment of society in the categories of "Advanced Technology," "Basic Sciences," and "Arts and Philosophy." The prize consists of academic honors, a gold medal and a cash gift of 50 million yen (about US$500,000). The Inamori Foundation was established in Kyoto, Japan, in 1984 by Dr. Kazuo Inamori, a Japanese entrepreneur and humanitarian. Dr. Inamori created the Kyoto Prize in reflection of his belief that human beings have no higher calling than to strive for the greater good of society, and that mankind's future can be assured only when there is a balance between our scientific progress and our spiritual depth.
